Trend - Distressed or Destroyed?

Aaaah, distressed jeans.. to me, what is there not to love especially when they look like you really have had them for many years and worn them with love. They are the sign of loyalty and a perfect pair that works for you year after year even some of us today would pay top dollar for a pair of ready made distressed. My mom went ballistic when she learned that I actually paid for my pants to look like 'beggar'! Seriously. Now, the question is when would distressed turned to destroyed? Maybe it is a matter of preference. Some like their jeans really distressed or borderline damaged while other prefer the clean 'I-just-bought-this-pair-yesterday' look.

I remember walking one day on errand in Dubai old 'souq' or market wearing my slightly distressed pair, well worn tee and a pair of flip flop and along the way I realized many of the people I passed by was staring at my jeans and looking at me with a sense of pity. Probably they thought I might need a new pair ;)  And my orthopedic actually said to my husband "She has a hole in her pants, buy her a new one" when he saw me with my favorite pair! I hope he was joking ;)

While I prefer my distressed jeans rather mild like the last picture above (I actually own the same pair of Current Elliot worn in the picture), what is your preference? Distressed, mildly distressed or destroyed? As always, I am thrilled to hear your opinion :)

  1. I'm warming up to a *little* distressing, but the big gaping holes...no. :-)

  3. I'm personally just a fan of distressed, not completely destroyed. But both looks are very fashionable and trendy right now!

  4. I think slightly distressed is the max I'd pay for. And probably will not wear destroyed so your third pic and second last pics are my preference.

  5. No distressed for me, I like my clothes pristine... But I do have one denim jacket that does look a bit worn, but it does not get a lot of wear. I've sort of gone off jeans a bit lately, even though I used to live in them when I was younger. If I do wear jeans, then it would be with something more formal like a nice jacket, or a really great cashmere sweater. Or just a plain (but new and pristine) T-shirt and a statement necklace.

  6. I like my jeans to be distressed...like I've worn them forever. I like the destroyed look, but not sure if I like it for me...

  7. I like a little wear and tear, but I also like totally clean unblemished jeans. I think there is a time and place for both.

I'm not as keen on the destroyed jeans. Sometimes I think they can look a bit silly. When I was in my teens I did wear destroyed jeans. So funny to see them back now.

  8. I would say that my favorites are mildly distressed, I think the distressed effect gives enough impression and I don't think I need to go the extra mile with destoyed jeans! But I definitely love the way they look on other people!

  11. I like naturally distressed things. Never really been one for pastiche but I like the look however it comes.

WOW!! I have heard that appearance is a big thing in Dubai but goodness me, your souq story made me feel a bit sad. But what is so cool and so beautiful is you dressing as you like regardless of the looks and judgement.

  12. I have loved distressed jeans since I first saw Farrah Fawcett wear them in an ad in the 70's! I prefer mildly distressed or distressed. I have a pair that went from distressed to destroyed and I can't seem to bring myself to wear them. Debbie @ ilovemylemonadelife.com

  13. I always think that people who don't understand the appeal of distressed jeans just don't quite understand fashion. The holes are supposed to be there, they're part of the look - and you're right, it's one of loyalty to a favourite pair, which is a relatively rare thing in our fast fashion world. Personally, I hope distressed jeans never go out of style!

  14. I have a few distressed jeans, very mild pilling or damage. I don't think I can go for the huge gaping holes. The mild distressed jeans can sail through the seasons but the ones with holes, you know they are only what's on trend currently and will probably look ridiculous a couple of years from now. Unless you keep them for years and wait till they become fashionable again.

  15. Oh yes, I owned that pair of Current/Elliott worn on Blair too and I'm sure it's the same as yours then. LOL! I love them and had been travelling with them quite a bit. I would prefer distressed over destroyed though. Although I haven't own a destroyed pair of jeans but I find that I've no urge to get a pair either. My bf always asked me this when he sees me in a destroyed jeans, " did you get some sort of discount for a damage pair of jeans?" LOL!!

  18. I had a pair of jeans like this in high school that looked like this. I had to very carefully put them on in sections because there were so many holes. If only I would have known it was going to be so stylish now!

  19. Mildly distressed is fine by me. And I don't mind a lot of stitching, but no holes please (draft, cold).
